Kyra

My second daughter, Kyra, was born at 12:28 AM on Sunday, January 23. She was born at 24 weeks and 1 day of my wife’s pregnancy. 24 weeks is considered the minimum time required for viability outside of the womb. Babies born at 24 weeks have a 50/50 chance of survival, and those that do survive can have severe developmental problems.

At first, the doctors were encouraged: Kyra was pink, she was active, and her lungs were working very well. Her blood pressure was slightly low, but they were able to control it.

On the evening of Monday the 24th, the doctors received ultrasound results which showed bleeding in one lobe of Kyra’s brain. On Tuesday morning, a second head ultrasound was performed, and there was bleeding in both lobes.

Kyra passed away at 5pm, Tuesday, January 25.
