Veritas ad Deum ducit

Truth leads to God. But not, apparently, to the White House, real or imagined.

You'll remember, I'm sure, my distress when the allegations of torture perpetrated by US and British forces in Iraq came to light. Now it seems that the government hasn't quite finished stoking my blood pressure.

I'm no lover of terrorists, and frankly, rotting in hell seems like far too good an outcome for most if not all of them. However, when considering them, I like to do so from the pleasant climbs of the moral high-ground. Only it seems our governments are only too keen to leap into the gutter and, metaphorically, lay down with the dogs.

This whole "secret CIA base" affair is just not on. I don't really care that much if someone throws the guy that masterminded 9/11 into a pool of piranhas, but I just don't want to be part of the team that does it. We're supposed to be better than that. War is war, but torturing people we've captured isn't what made this country great and it sure as hell wasn't the ideal for which a lot of fine men and women have laid down their lives in the past.

If the government thinks it should have the ability to spirit people away in the night to some remote location and torture them, and we know this government does, then they are wrong, and this country deserves better, damn it.

Now, on to this ABC mini-series fiasco. This is even worse because, damn it all, now I'm having to defend Madeleine Albright, a woman I think is the biggest waste of oxygen ever to despoil public office. But you see here's the deal: what happened on 9/11 should be dealt with seriously and honestly. It is not suitable material for entertainment and unless you intend to stick to the facts, that's exactly what this new mini-series is going to be.

Personally, I think the Clinton administration didn't do enough to deal with the likes of Bin Laden. But then, their failure to imagine what he was prepared to do is not unique nor is it so unreasonable given the world before the Autumn of 2001. I don't want to excuse them of anything for which history will find them wanting, but at the same time, let's just stick to the facts here people. Having pretend conversations is fine when you're dealing with events of 50 or 100 years ago, but not events of 5 years ago, and not events in which we still find ourselves embroiled.

A little truth, from anyone, would be awful nice about now.
