For two nights and a day he held the venomous vermin at bay, hacking and slaying and slaying and hacking, until the last of them fell before his magical hatchet. Unfortunately he was stung repeatedly in the defense of his fair city; and the mystics and healers have told him that he will die before the new moon rises, unless he can drink the magic potion of St. Bede. Beldeg, upon enquiring the location of the magic potion, has been told that it is held by one of five horrible creatures which live in five remote regions; regions so remote that Beldeg has time to venture and defeat only one of the creatures before the new moon rises. Two of the five creatures are undead (a Skeleton and a Vampire) and two of the five distant locations are underground (a cave and a dungeon). Furthermore each foe is armed with a unique weapon; two of which are missile weapons (a bow and a javelin) and another is a mace. Each creature also has a unique treasure, three of which are bags of coins (gold, silver and copper), one of which is a pile of gems, and the last the magical potion of St. Bede. Before setting out, the librarian scholar of Deira tells Beldeg the following ten facts:
