`Twas Safeway, and the Slithy-Mart
Did gyre and gimble down the aisle
All flimsy the produce in my cart
Mostly over-ripe and wilted, vile
"Beware the Raddichio, my son!
The leaves that crunch, the stems that fall
Beware the Romaine, and shun
The fibrous Escarole!"
He took his salad fork in hand:
Long time the Endive foe he sought --
So rested he by the Watercress tree,
And stood awhile in veggie thought.
And, unlike the Iceberg, light and bland,
The Red-Leaf, with phloems of flame,
Came furrowing through the spinach land,
And Burpee'd as he came.
One, two! One, two! And chew and chew
The deli-slicer went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its lettuce-head
He went a-munching back....
